World Health Day - April 7, 2021
What is World Health Day?
Since taking effect in 1950, April 7th marks the celebration of World Health Day. World Health Day creates awareness of a specific health theme that highlights an area of concern for the World Health Organization.¹ The theme for World Health Day 2021 is Let’s build a fairer, healthier world for everyone. The COVID-19 pandemic has weakened health progress, pushed more people into poverty and food insecurity, and increased gender, social, and health inequalities.¹ The theme this year aims to eliminate these health inequities. World Health Day ensures that the highest attainable standard of health is a fundamental right of every human being.¹
Why is World Health Day important?
World Health Day is important to create awareness surrounding health issues throughout the world. How can we help solve or prevent global- issues if we do not acknowledge them? Health inequities can be preventable with strategies that emphasize improving access to quality health care services. It is necessary to work towards ensuring that all people can obtain equality within their community and accessibility to resources that are essential to individuals health.¹
What actions can you take?
We must get involved in our community to help those in need. World Health Day is an opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of our health, the health of our communities, and our world. World Health Day is an opportunity to reflect on your health. Reflect with a friend or family member about their feelings towards their health. Look over past themes of World Health Day to see how health care has changed over the years. Use this day as a time to reflect, and make goals for the future. World Health Day is a perfect opportunity to make changes to better your health and your life!
